Lighting a space with a single ceiling fixture makes it flat and lifeless. Professional lighting design layers three types of light together: each serves a different function, and together they give a space depth, comfort and flexibility.
011. Ambient Lighting
The base light level of a space, enabling safe movement and general visibility. Recessed spots, linear fixtures or indirect cove light form this layer. It is not enough alone, but it is indispensable.
022. Task Lighting
Focused light for a specific task: kitchen counter, reading chair, work desk. Added to ambient light, it brings higher illuminance to the point of need and improves visual comfort.
033. Accent Lighting
Directional light that highlights a painting, texture or architectural element. It adds hierarchy and character. For effect, a contrast of at least 3:1 over ambient is recommended.
